God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts’’ (Galatians 4:6). The same Spirit that dwelt and still dwells in the Son becomes the life of the believer; in the unity of that one Spirit, and the fellowship of the same life that is in Christ, he is one with Him. As between the vine and branch, it is a life-union that makes them one. The parable teaches us the completeness of the union. Motives are mighty powers; it is of infinite importance that we keep them high and clear. Here surely is the highest motive of all: ‘‘We are His (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works’’ (Ephesians 2:10). We have been grafted by Him into Christ, to bring forth much fruit. Whatever God creates is exquisitely suited to its end. He created the sun to give light, and how perfectly it does its work! He created the eye to see, and how beautifully it fulfills its object! And He created the new man to do good works; can we affirm that our new nature is also perfectly formed for its purpose?
What a sure standing-ground it gives him, as he rests his right to Christ and all His fullness on nothing less than the Father’s own purpose and work! ’’ The Savior said, ‘‘Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted’’ (Matthew 15:13); but every branch grafted by Him into the True Vine will never be plucked out of His hand (John 10:28). As it was the Father to whom Christ owed all He was, and in whom He had all His strength and His life as the Vine, so to the Father the believer owes his place and his security in Christ.
