Samuel Chase Samuel Chase (1741-1811) has an important place in Supreme Court history as the only Justice to have been impeached. That is not, however, why he is included in this list. Chase had been a leader in Maryland in the fight for independence and had legal ability. But his extreme political partisanship made him the epitome of all that a Justice should not be. In 1800, the Court could not sit because of the absence of a quorum. During that time, Chase was busy in his state working for President Adams's reelection.

Yet his opinions were too often unpolished, as though he lacked the interest for the sustained work involved in transforming first drafts into finished products. Although Chief Justice Warren came to appreciate Douglas's supporting votes, he felt that the peripatetic Justice spent too much time writing nonlegal books and doing things not related to the Court. With all his potential, Douglas made little significant contribution to jurisprudence; in Supreme Court history, he is now remembered primarily as Justice Black's auxiliary among the Justices.
