How Much Land? The answer given to any one of these four questions on size has obvious implications for the other three. This becomes clear when the focus is shifted to the amount of land required for a new mission. Four guidelines will illustrate the complexity of this question. First, a new mission probably will need at least twice as much land as those planning it believe will be necessary. Second, a reasonable goal is a minimum of at least one acre for every one hundred people at worship. Thus if it is assumed this new mission eventually will grow to include a combined total of 2,500 worshipers at three services, that means a minimum of twenty to twenty-five acres.

A new generation of leaders in these "Schedule I" and "Schedule II" churches today may be open to the merits of a denominational affiliation. Most of the congregations seeking a denominational affiliation tend to be (a) relatively new and/or (b) composed largely of recent immigrants and/or (c) served by a successor to that original founding pastor and/or (d) African-American and/or (e) located in an urban community where the impact of isolation can be more painful.
That assumption undergirded much of the planning for the new churches founded in the 1950s and even, to a limited extent, the 1960s. Next came President Dwight D. Eisenhower who pointed to the dream of an interstate highway system as the number-one accomplishment of his eight years in office and the geographical parish was pushed another step toward obsolescence. By the mid-1960s it was widely but not universally recognized that church shoppers placed geographical proximity fairly low on the list of factors in choosing a church.
